Missional Evangelism – All Believers are Missionaries; All Places are Mission Fields
Missional is a popular word today. It implies that in our evangelism, we do more than simply throw the gospel at someone. Instead we look at our culture as if we were on the mission field and ask what we can do to connect with that culture and reach those around us. Our new course "Missional Evangelism" does just that.

All Places Are Mission Fields asks the questions: How do we understand the mission of God; and what does this mean for the local church and our families? This study examines these questions in light of Scripture and examples of believers who have truly embraced a missional lifestyle.

Note to new participants: Please read the article, "New Ownership". For a copy or for more information, contact Janine Draper at 762-7556 or email her.

Childcare is available for children ages 0-5. Nursery 0-2 (newborns are welcome to stay with mommy in the sessions) and Preschool 3-5 (Fiona Bates leads a fun-filled time of learning and care.)

The 3rd Annual Urban Adventure Challenge is coming MAY 24.

Parenting as a Team Adapted from an article by William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN (married 34 years with 8 kids).

Adapted from an article by William Sears, MD and Martha Sears, RN (married 34 years with 8 kids)..

In the last Family Matters email we began reviewing "Parenting as a Team." Each partner may have a very different approach to parenting. Diverse opinions can be used to strengthen, not weaken, effective parenting. Cooperation, not competition, is the key.

1, Act as a team and rely on each other.

2. Display discipline and unite. Let your love for one another foster appreciation for differing approaches to discipline. If used wisely, differences can benefit the kids. Whether your approach is stern or you are more likely to talk about what had happened and try to understand the child's viewpoint and feelings, above all, value the relationship (with your spouse, with your child).

A good question to ask yourself when you are about to "lose it" over some "spilled milk" discipline issue is, "If I were my child, how would I want my mom/dad to react?" Trying to see things through your kids' eyes may help you understand the underlying reason for less than ideal behavior. Sometimes, kids simply need to hear "No, you can't do that."

There is no perfect discipline. Parents, like children, learn through "trial-and-error."

Discipline styles adapt and can blend over time. Whether you are firmly assertive or gently empathetic you can find an approach that works best for your children.

Always present a united front. Children can be crafty about playing one parent against the other. Moms and dads need to help their kids understand that they, as a team, are the ones in charge. When both parents give the same message kids will get the idea that there is no use in pushing the issue.

Sometimes that will mean listening to your kids and ending the discussion with "Dad/Mom and I will talk it over and decide." You can then discuss and weigh each other's opinions out of earshot. Listening to parents disagree can confuse younger children. Once you've reach a compromise, get back to your kids with the answer.

Older children can learn compromise, discussion, conflict resolution and consensus building by watching their parents work out their decision. Always stick up for your partner - The best gift you can give your kids is a healthy, mutually loving marriage.

Parenting as a Team In the coming issues of FM Email we'll look at
3). Taking time for two.
