Here at Evangel you will often hear the term Freedom's Door, (FD) however you may not know exactly what it is, or how it operates. FD is a recovery program for men who are caught in the trap of addiction. One of the key philosophies of FD is to remain 'curbside', or open to men who are within a few days of coming right off the street. At FD, men live in an environment conducive to spiritual growth and freedom from the slavery of personal addiction. Clients are introduced to a community concept, as they learn life skills together. Community is a huge ingredient of FD, with everyone in the program learning to cope with real life issues and daily conflicts in a healthy Christian way. Working through the 12 step program, and using language taken from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, FD men progress toward the day when they can reintegrate into community life, having been set free by faith in Jesus. These men are
always encouraged to acknowledge Jesus as the Lord of their lives. The men learn to give to their community by helping local charities, such as working at the local food bank and other organizations. Days and weeks are busy at FD, with the men waking at 6:30 AM, going through a full day of structured activities, prayer and recovery sessions, and not being finished until 5:00
PM. Each of the men are also required to attend seven meetings per week, either at a church, AA or NA.
One way we can assist FD is to volunteer as client mentors. This could be a great ministry for people who are looking to share their life experience and their faith. Please let me know if you would like to explore this further.
Please be in prayer for this wonderful local ministry, their clients and staff.
FREEDOM'S DOOR The men of Freedom's Door are having a banquet where they will personally serve you a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings. They want you to get to know them. It takes place at Mission Creek Alliance Church at 5:30 PM, May 22. You will hear some exciting stories of their journey out of addiction and even hear them sing! Tickets are available today at a booth in the foyer or you may talk to Pastor Don H., Lloyd McClelland, or Geoff Smith or phone 717-0472 throughout the week.
