Hello to the HMI BC family!

At the Royal Bank
Cup Awards Banquet
Anthem Singing at
the Royal Bank Cup
May has been another busy month for me.. with many kilometers traveled, many people connections, and many more opportunities to share faith in Jesus.

Here are a few highlights from the month:

During the first part of May, I traveled to Victoria to attend the Royal Bank Cup Canadian Junior A Championship. This turned out to be a real great week, as I had the opportunity to meet and re-acquaint with many people in the hockey world. It was good to spend some time with fellow HMI staff members John Bechtold and Tim Wiebe, both from Alberta. I was also pleased to speak at North Douglas Church on Sunday morning, May 10. At the tournament, it was an honour to sing the National Anthem at 5 games during the week, as well as to pray for the meal at the Awards Banquet. These are very important times to show up and be a presence for chaplaincy and for the Lord.

Later in the month, I invited all the HMI chaplains in the province to attend a Chaplains Retreat here in Kelowna. Many were not able to attend, but six of us did gather, and we had a fabulous time! The six were: Wayne Halvorson from Vernon, Emil Fernandes from Abbotsford, Chris Wiens from Langley, Colin Chornohus from Burnaby/Vancouver and Norm Sowden from Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. We prayed, shared stories and ideas, and just had fun together. During those days I found out that there are a few great golfers who disguise themselves as chaplains! A special moment in the retreat was when a few of us went to visit Phil and Niami Dalgleish. Phil is an old semi-pro player/Junior Coach, and a great personal friend... did I mention that he is almost 90 years old?? These retreats are important, in that they build a team of HMI chaplains. (It is far too easy to simply be out on our own in chaplaincy work.) The prayer and the camaraderie that we found was well worth the time and investment of the retreat.

This month, I was pleasantly surprised when one of our fans here in Westside approached me and asked me to perform his wedding. So, on July 18, I will be doing just that... this is, for me what chaplaincy is about. I will be performing 2 hockey related weddings in the next months. Finally, I am meeting with the marketing staff of my club here (Westside Warriors) and we are planning a Faith Night for November this year. I am pleased to have an evening where we can highlight the chapel program and give direction, hope and faith in Jesus to many.

Thank you for al your consistent prayer for this ministry. I am finding it a real financial struggle to keep things afloat, so please lift this up to the Lord. If you know of someone who may be interested in supporting a sports chaplaincy and camp ministry, please help me by speaking to them, and also let me know.

"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, not in despair, not abandoned, nor destroyed... so we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen." 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 18

For some, overtime in hockey is called sudden death, I prefer to call it sudden Life!
